Grazing Effects on Bovine-Associated and Background Fecal Indicator Bacteria Levels in Edge-of-Field Runoff

چکیده

Excessive levels of fecal indicator bacteria are a major cause water quality impairment. Grazing and its management may significantly impact concentrations; however, other sources can contribute to issues both in the presence absence cattle, thus confounding results. In this study, we utilize Bacteroides markers evaluate loading from cattle versus background runoff rotationally grazed ungrazed pastures how grazing management, timing relation events, stocking rate affect marker (AllBac BoBac) ratios their E. coli concentrations at small watershed scale. The data suggest that AllBac BoBac were not impacted by or rate; events these found runoff. Furthermore, BoBac/AllBac ratio confirmed contamination present when sites destocked for over two weeks largely originated than cattle. Thus, magnitude proportion impacts on edge-of-field dramatically reduced shortly after de-stocking. However, continued significant coli.

The Effect of Cattle Grazing on Indicator Bacteria in Runoff From a Pacific Northwest Watershed ~

Total coliform (TC), fecal coliform (FC), and fecal streptococcal (FS) numbers were monitored for 3 years to determine the effect of grazing on the presence of these organisms in runoff from a cattlegrazed and a nongrazed watershed in the Pacific Northwest. The watersheds were characterized by winter precipitation and summer grazing. Weighted-average numbers of TC and FS in runoff did not appea...

Levels and patterns of fecal indicator bacteria in stormwater runoff from homogenous land use sites and urban watersheds.

Routine stormwater monitoring programs focus on quantification of average fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) concentration at the terminal watershed discharge point. While important for permit compliance, such monitoring provides little insight into relative bacteria levels from different land use types or the mechanisms that influence FIB concentrations. The goal of this study was to quantify the ...
